The Maryland Student Hockey League got underway last week with several Howard Conference games.
Atholton defeated River Hill, 4-2, in a non-league matchup on Nov. 16. The Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period thanks to goals by Shasta Braithwaite and Kevin Green. Both goals where assisted by Casey Carpenter.
The Raiders tied it up in the second period with a pair of power play goals by Derek Potter, assists went to Jake Mills, Tre' White and Matt Haney.
In the final frame, Atholton took the lead for good after Mills scored an unassisted power play goal. Daniil Zeller sealed the win with a goal that was assisted by Mills.
Goalie Tommy Pappas (29 saves) kept Atholton in the game after allowing two early scores by settling down over the final two periods. River Hill’s Will Barrett was also strong between the pipes, stopping 32 shots.
The Raiders returned to action Nov. 19 against HOWL – a collective of players from Hammond, Oakland Mills, Wilde Lake and Long Reach. Atholton won 6-1 in the Howard Conference opener for both teams.
White scored an unassisted goal to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead after the first period. Evan Davis and Jason Pazulski added second period goals, while Zeller and Potter each scored in the third to extend the lead to 5-0.
The HOWL took advantage of an Atholton penalty after Dominic Sesto scored a goal that was assisted by Ben Burmester.
Pappas and Kyle Brinker combined for 12 saves, while HOWL keeper Alexa Kanakry stopped 18 shots.
