Girls lacrosse: Winters Mill falls short in title game loss to Fallston

In three previous trips to UMBC Stadium, the Winters Mill Falcons had brought home three championship trophies.

But a solid, senior-dominated Fallston team ended the youthful Falcons' quest for a fourth title in five years with a 13-9 victory in the Class 2A/1A title game on Tuesday, May 22

Senior midfielder Felice Artuso scored three goals for the Falcons, while senior attack Morgan Maier and junior midfielder Sydney Trentzsch each added two scores.

But the Falcons couldn't keep up with the potent senior duo of Jenna Mosketti and Courtney Laubach, who combined for ten of Fallston's 13 goals.

The Falcons closed at 13-6, while Fallston ended its championship season with a 15-4-1 record. The Cougars, who defeated Winters Mill by an 11-7 score on April 20, won their first state title in 2009.

"We were good enough to get here, but we are not the Winters Mill we have been in the past," said Courtney Vaughn, who was coaching in her eighth state championship game. "We've learned each practice and each game, but we still have a long way to go. We knew that we had our hands full, and they were definitely the better team. We'll be back."

Fallston took a 3-0 lead in the first five minutes, before Artuso's free-position shot broke the ice for Winters Mill.

Another Artuso goal at the 16-minute mark of the first half got the Falcons within 4-3, but Paulina Christ's score at 10:54 started the Cougars' game-deciding six-goal spurt. Mosketti's fifth goal of the night gave Fallston a commanding 10-3 lead with 18:43 remaining.

Winters Mill made a final run midway through the second half. Senior midfielder Madison Cyr, the team's top scorer, won four consecutive draw controls and the Falcons got consecutive goals from Maier, Artuso, and Sydney Trentzsch to pull within 10-6.

But Laubach's unassisted goal at the 11:32 mark ended the run, and Winters Mill never got closer than four goals the rest of the way.

"We tried to stay positive and emphasized working as a team," said Artuso, one of just five seniors on the Winters Mill roster. "We worked on pushing the ball in transition all year."

But it was the Fallston transition game that carried the night.

"They're a seasoned team, and they come right at you," Vaughn said.
