Carroll schools, McDaniel and county offices closed Monday for Hurricane Sandy

The Carroll County Public Schools system has announced that all public schools and offices, including the central office in Westminster, will be closed on Monday, Oct. 29, as the area prepares for the arrival of Hurricane Sandy.

McDaniel College has announced it will be closed Monday as well, also due to the impending arrival of the  hurricane.

Carroll County government offices will also be closed Monday — though essential personnel are to report to work.  All county facilities will be closed, including Northern Landfill.

But while county offices close, the Carroll County Emergency Operations Center became fully activated on Sunday.

Emergency Shelters

Effective at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Carroll County opened two emergency shelters at:

• Century High School, 355 Ronsdale Road, Sykesville.

• Winters Mill High School, 560 Gorsuch Road, Westminster.

At these sites, those who need shelter will be provided with a cot, blanket and food. The county encourages residents to bring any other personal items they may need including all medications, pillows, towels, change of clothing, snacks/ drinks (if desired) books/board games and any personal care items (toothbrush, soap, feminine supplies, diapers and formula, etc.).

Anyone who is dependent upon special medical or nursing care MUST bring a caregiver with them to the shelter, as well as any medical devices necessary to meet family members’ needs.

At the moment, county government is planning to open for normal operations on Tuesday at 8 a.m.
