Sykesville's longtime town manager resigns

Longtime Sykesville Town Manager Matt Candland announced this past week that he is resigning.

He said he planned to formally enter his resignation on May 29 at the Town Council meeting.

Candland, who has been town manager in Sykesville since 1995, said in an email that he informed Mayor Michael Miller and the Town Council of his intentions last week.

"This has been a difficult decision for my family and me," he wrote, "but we feel it is the right one."

Candland confirmed that he was appointed as the borough manager in the Borough of Carlisle, Pa., on May 24. Similar to Sykesville, that community has an elected council and mayor and an appointed town manager.

Candland, 46, and wife, Jenny, have seven children ranging in ages from 5 to 20. According to a release from the Borough of Carlisle, Candland will assume his new duties on July 2, at an annual salary of $115,000.
