Man shot by police in Catonsville identified

Baltimore County police announced that the man shot by a county police officer in a Sept. 12 incident in Catonsville has been identified as Steven David Gary, 45.

Gary's last known address is in the 700 block of Cloudyfold Drive in the Milford Mill area of Baltimore County.

Gary has been charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, theft and reckless endangerment.

He remains under guard at the hospital as of Friday afternoon.

Bail has been set at $35,000.

The officer from the Wilkens Station involved in the shooting is identified as Ofc. Boone, a 13-year veteran.

Per department policy, he has been placed on routine administrative leave.

According to police, Boone was patrolling the area of the 700 block of Frederick Road around 11:35 a.m. when he observed a suspicious man behind the wheel of a white Toyota Rav4.

When the officer checked on the status of the car, he learned the Toyota had been reported as stolen in Carroll County, Ofc. Shawn Vinson, a spokesman for county police. said Wednesday afternoon.

When the officer approached the car, the driver tried to drive away, Vinson said.

The man "moved the vehicle in the direction of " the officer, according to Vinson.

"The officer, fearing for his life, fired his service weapon," Vinson said. "We're not sure how many times it was fired yet, but at least one time."
