Beltway in Catonsville to close Friday night

Beginning Friday at 10 p.m., the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will remove a sign structure that spans the Baltimore Beltway between the exit to US 40 (Baltimore National Pike) and the Edmondson Avenue exit.

The sign should be removed and lanes open by 5 a.m. Saturday, December 22.

Crews will begin closing lanes to remove the sign tonight starting with the inner loop lanes.

Lanes will then be closed on the outer loop.

Total closure to remove the entire sign structure will be at midnight.

The following detours will be in effect:

•Outer loop to westbound US 40, turn left on North Rolling Road then left onto MD 144 (Frederick Road) and back to I-695.

•Inner loop to westbound MD 144, turn right onto North Rolling Road, then right on eastbound US 40 and back to I-695.

The SHA recommends that motorists from the northeast seeking to access I-95 in Arbutus exit at I-70 and use US 29 to MD 100 or use I-695 east to southbound I-95 in Rosedale.

Crews will use signs and barrels to guide motorists through the work zone.

Damage to the sign structure was discovered while SHA crews were conducting a routine inspection.

Since the structure spans the width of the Beltway, the entire structure must be removed without traffic traveling beneath the work area.

Once the structure is repaired or replaced, crews will install and replace the signs.

In the meantime, SHA will place temporary directional signs to guide traffic.
