Carney: May is the time to play at Parkville Senior Center

Since it is Older Americans Month and the theme is "Never Too Old to Play" here are some the fun events coming up at the Parkville Senior Center:

On May 31 at 1 p.m., a Caribbean calypso party will take you to the Islands of Trinidad and Tobago to experience the lyrics and social commentary of calypso music, and more. This interactive entertaining and educational program will be presented by art instructor Laura Numsen.

Pre-registration at the front desk of the center is required, so hurry, since it happens next week.

A Father's Day celebration will take place on Tuesday, June 12 at 12:30 p.m.

There will be a flea market on Saturday, June 16, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is open to the public, and parking is free. The vendors fee will be $15. For more information, call the center at 410-887-5338.

The merry month of May brought the aroma of mulch from my neighbors' yards, and while I had 14 unopened bags of it that I had bought from the Boy Scouts fundraiser sale in March sitting in my driveway, I had no one to spread it.

Then, I found hidden under a pile of junk mail, a postcard advertising Short Cutters Inc., Landscape Service. The owner's wife, Raquel Kintzel, who came to do the estimate, told me that although she and her husband Jason, have owned this Landscaping Business for 15 years, they began just this year to start sending out the post cards. I was pleased with the work the crew did.

As the month draws to a close, students from Carney Elementary School, accompanied by Carney Principal Stacey Durkovic, will lead the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance at a Memorial Day ceremony to honor members of the military with substantial ties to Maryland killed since May 2011. The ceremony will take place Monday, May 28 at 10 a.m. in the Circle of the Immortals at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens, 200 E. Padonia Road in Timonium. The observance is free and open to the public.
