Happy New Year, Carney!

Congratulations to a special couple who celebrate their wedding anniversary on New Years Day. Joe and Ruth Sabatino, of Woodcroft, counted up 69 years of wedded bliss on Jan. l.

Happy Birthday wishes to Teddie Betkey, who blew out 69 candles on her cake on Jan. 14.

I would like to say "thank you" to the people who provide those services we take for granted all year round no matter what the weather:

First to get a thank you is our good-natured postal carrier, Alan Phillips, who has been delivering those bills and stuff in our community for the past five years. I recall how on an icy, slushy January day a couple of years ago when I rushed out of the house trying to catch him with my outgoing mail, he kindly stepped out of his truck to take it so I wouldn't have to go sliding on the icy curb.

Second is Baltimore Sun carrier Ginger Williams. Since I am an early bird who likes to catch up on the news with my morning coffee, I really appreciate the fact she always tosses the paper right smack on the driveway where I can see it even on dark mornings. (Incidentally, a fringe benefit of having a print edition delivered is the plastic bag it comes in is so handy for cleaning up when I walk the dog.)

Third, I would like to thank the three-man crew from Clay Stambaugh Refuse Service that carts away trash and recycling in our neighborhood during the pre-dawn hours on Tuesday and Wednesday. The truck driver is Robert Mast and his co-workers Santos Ramos and Enrique Martinez dump the trash and recycling bins into the truck with proficiency.

Assuming the Ravens beat the Patriots last Sunday, you can keep on celebrating the Ravens season at a Superbowl Tailgate Party at the Parkville Senior Center, 8601 Harford Road on Thursday, Jan.31 from ll a.m. to 1 p.m. Wear your favorite NFL jersey, hat or sweat shirt, and join this inside tailgate party. Tickets are $6 and include a cold cut sub, chips, beverage and a cupcake, but you have to sign up at the front desk with payment by Monday Jan. 28.

What's new down at North Plaza Shopping Center?

Ledo's Pizza will be opening in the space formerly occupied by the Italian Bistro. While we will all miss the Bistro, I understand that Ledo's, which has several other locations around Baltimore, including the White Marsh area, has very good pizza.

The Parkville Laundromat, which will be located on the spot where Exotic Aquatics once was, is also coming to North Plaza.

It appears that construction activity is going on inside both places. So far, there are no signs announcing opening dates have been posted
