Father's Day events at area churches this weekend

A Father's Day contemporary worship in Arbutus United Methodist Church, 1201 Maple Ave., begins Sunday, June 19 at 10 a.m. Dads, dress for comfort. Lively music is planned, along with special tributes for all fellas attending. Call 410-242-9029.

Head to Violetville United Methodist Church at Coolidge and Joh avenues Sunday, June 19 to join in the Father's Day tributes during the 11 a.m. worship. Honors include lyrical and spoken notes of appreciation for each dad in attendance plus tokens of gratitude. Call 410-525-3191.

Bring your dad to breakfast Sunday, June 19 at 9:30 a.m. in Hope Presbyterian Church, 4748 Shelbourne Road. A menu of sweets and savories is promised, preceding the 11 a.m. celebratory worship for Father's Day. Hope's members invite the community to the rain or shine flea mart June 25 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Gently used treasures, tasty nibbles, baked treats and outdoor fun for youngsters will highlight this event. Summertime and the livin' is easy, especially when you can curl up in a shady nook to devour a new book. The avid readers from Violetville United Methodist Church can help. St. Clement Catholic Church's free food distributions are held Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 2700 Washington Ave. Families may register for these giveaway days by calling 410-242-1025.

When area schools are shuttered, there are no lunches for those students whose families struggle to keep food in stock. Summer is the season when Southwest Emergency Services receives urgent calls for food assistance from anxious parents.
