UCBAC wrestling: First-round matches go by fast, as most top seeds advance

The 2012 UCBAC Wrestling Championship Tournament got off to a clean and fast start Friday at Bel Air High School.

The event's first day saw preliminary and quarterfinal matches and a round of wrestle backs that could have lasted into the 9 p.m. Range, but because of a number of forfeits in the preliminary and wrestle back rounds, actual wrestling action was concluded before 7 p.m. and with no real surprises.

Of the top four seeds in 14 weight classes, just six failed to reach the semifinal round.

Fallston, which has seven in the semis, leads the team scoring heading into Saturday's action. The Cougars totaled 69.5 points, 5.5 better than C. Milton Wright's 64. The Mustangs have five semifinalists.

Patterson Mill (six semifinalists) is third with 63, while Bel Air and Rising Sun, the defending champion, are tied for fourth with 59. The Bobcats have five in the semis and Tigers have six.

Rounding out the top 10 are Perryville, 53.5; North East, 52; Bo Manor, 49.5; Harford Tech, 42.5; and Aberdeen, 32. The rest of the 15 team field include North Harford, 25; Joppatowne, 17; Elkton, 16; Havre de Grace, 15; and Edgewood, 13.

Saturday wrestling will get underway 9 a.m. with round 2 wrestle backs. The championship semifinals will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by round 3 wrestle backs to conclude at noon.

Following a lunch break from noon to 1 p.m., round 4 wrestle backs will run from 1 to 2 p.m. with consolation finals to follow from 2 to 3 p.m. Championship finals will begin at 3:30 p.m.
