Thanksgiving Day for running as well as eating

The popularity of Thanksgiving Day running events was apparent on Williams Street in Bel Air Nov. 24.

Runners in the 16th annual YMCA of Central Maryland Turkey Trot packed the starting line from curb to curb and 150 meters deep. A half-hour later, the 1,173 participants produced a finish-line backup of similar density on the nearby Ma & Pa Trail.

The huge pack, 40 percent larger than last year, created an intimate, elbow-bumping running experience paced by local collegiate and high school runners.

Tyler Muse, a freshman at Harford Community College, led the way. Whitney Hora, a sophomore at Wilmington University, finished far ahead of the women's field.

Muse surged near the mile mark to pull away from Brandon Smith and Ben Pickett and win by 100 meters in 16:32. Smith took second in 16:50, and Pickett, third in 16:55. Dave Knaide placed fourth in 17:31, and Chris Wagner, fifth in 17:42.

Others in the top 10 were Jerry Henderson, 17:50; Andrew Ellis, 17:53; Kyle Orlando, 18:06; Frank Abbate, 18:08; and Sam Caretti, 18:07.

Hora won the women's race by almost 2 minutes, placing 19th overall in 19:13. Sisters Kaitlin and Lindsay Ames took the next two places in 21:16 and 21:25, respectively. Also in the women's top 10 were Jennifer Bouffard, 21:39; Kelly Machala, 21:40; Jennifer Eikenberg, 22:01; Amanda Johnston, 22:03; Lauren Greenberg, 22:12; Jessica Rogers, 22:11; and Grace Frakenhauser, 22:10
