Kays, Colopietro are winners in Arena Club hosted 5K

Danielle Kays reprised her win in the women's race of the Shamrock 'n Roll 5K Saturday. Dan Colopietro earned his first-ever road-race victory, leaving the men's field far behind.

The two collected the top prizes in the second annual race, held at the Arena Club in Bel Air to benefit the Al Cesky Scholarship Fund. The event drew 360 entrants with 284 of them running the 5K.

Kays, a 37-year-old systems engineer at Aberdeen Proving Ground, ran 19:18 to win by over a minute. The performance was a minute slower than her 2012 win, but it gave her a comfortable victory margin. Meredith Kefauver Olsen of Baltimore finished second in 20:25 and Heidi Myers of Baltimore was third in 21:23.

Colopietro, 21, a distance runner at C. Milton Wright High School three years ago, raced over the course in 16:07 to finish more than 2 minutes ahead of second place. After a two-year hiatus from running, he resumed his training last summer with the goal of making the University of Maryland track team in 2014.

Ken Ikemoto, a student at Patterson Mill High School, finished second in 18:15. Bel Air High School students Casey Sims and Jordan Mensh placed third and fourth, respectively, in 18:23 and 18:49.

Others in the men's top 10 were Andrew Towne, Bel Air, 18:52; Jason Lewis, Conowingo, 19:28; Steve Kudla, Forest Hill, 19:36; Dan Lekites, Monkton, 20:19; Brett Schrader, Abingdon, 20:23; and Aaron Posey, Pasadena, 20:33.

Finishing in the women's top 10 were Nicki Iacaruso, Bel Air, 20:22; Kim Roberts, Montgomery Village, 22:33; Samantha Jones, Baltimore, 22:39; Donna Lewis, Bel Air, 22:43; Nancy Hill, Havre de Grace, 22:48; Niki Burger, Bel Air, 23:10; and Christina Jordan, Perry Hall, 23:11.

Rock 'n Roll USA Marathon

Darren Thompson of Bel Air ran an evenly paced 26.2 miles in finishing 55th among 3,569 in the Rock 'n Roll USA Marathon Saturday in Washington, D.C. Thompson, 36, was timed in 3:02:28 after reaching the halfway point in 1:31:14. He placed eighth in his age group.

Kelly Cannon of Belcamp placed 10th in her age group and was 35th overall among women in 3:24:50.

Adam Bosley of Bel Air ran 1:24:03 in the half marathon, finishing 130th overall. Sara Miller of Bel Air ran 1:46:57. About 70 Harford runners competed in the half marathon.

Shamrock Marathon

Danielle Bowen, 21, of Bel Air, finished 11th in her age group in the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon Sunday in Virginia Beach, Va. She ran 3:42:35 to place 120th among the women. Seven Other Harford runners were among the 2,992 marathon finishers: Dale Jordan, 4:12:15; Brandon Turner, 4:15:18; Jennifer Ehrlich, 4:36:27; Shannon Famini, 4:57:02; Lauren Pillar, 5:00.05; Mike Harlow, 5:08:43; and Lisa Schneiders, 5:47:16.

Top Harford finishers among the 8,480 in the half marathon were Ryan Stiltner, 1:37:48; Jeremy Lyman, 1:48:35; Gail Brown, 1:50:15; Jaclyn Parker, 1:51:42; and Karen Angelini, 1:51:49.

In other races

Christine Betzing of Forest Hill ran 1:34:39 in the New York City Half Marathon Saturday. She was one of 15,000 finishers in the 13.1-mile race. Also under 1:45 were Kristi Burke of Bel Air, 1:49:09, and Eileen Giovanazi of Bel Air, 1:42:33.

Jeff Burger and Christine Trzcinski were the top finishers among 40 runners in the RASAC Survivor Warm-up 3.8-mile race in Bel Air Sunday. Burger ran 24:33 to lead Darren Thompson, 25:46, and Efrain Martinez, 27:06, to the finish. Trzcinski led the women in 27:06. Courtney Waldhauser was second in 30:37, and Gwyneth Lewis, third in 32:37.
