Karsten Brown wins New Year's Day 10K race in Joppa

Karsten Brown won the annual New Year's Day footrace in Joppa Tuesday for the second time, ignoring sub-freezing temperatures to win the 10K event easily in shorts and singlet. Sarah Zephir-Thomason won the women's race.

None of the other 98 participants were in sight when Brown crossed the finish line on Mountain Road. The 38-year-old from Virginia, who routinely runs more than 100 races per year, finished in 37:46.

That was 2 minutes slower than his course-record performance of three years ago — and the RASAC course this time was 0.1-mile longer — but it was fast enough to win by over a minute. Shawn Loper of Bel Air finished second in 38:55, and Jerry Henderson of Bel Air, third in 39:02.

Zephir-Thomason, 37, of Forest Hill, won even more easily than Brown. She finished in 44:57, three minutes faster than a year ago, and 1:43 ahead of runner-up Christine Trzcinski of Baltimore. Laura Muneses of Perry Hall was third in 49:36.

Also finishing in the women's top 10 were Heather Thompson, 50:16; Michele Hoffman, 50:24; Robbie Reeves, 51:29; Donna Lewis, 51:42; Andi Miller, 51:57; Renee Vadas, 52:08; and Jennifer Perkovich, 52:25.

Others in the men's top 10: Jeff Burger, 39:10; Charles Powell II, 39:17; Kevin Hennessey, 41:21; Darren Thompson, 41:38; Dave Stevenson, 43:06; Efrain Martinez, 43:44; and Mike Feinberg, 43:47.

In other races

Rob Tisch of Bel Air was the top masters finisher in the Celtic Solstice 5 Mile in Baltimore Dec. 15. He placed 17th among 3,069 finishers in 28:11. In the 50-54 age group, Joe Richardson of Forest Hill placed third in 33:22 and Joe Zulty of Fallston was fourth in 34:00.

Bart Rein of Forest Hill placed fourth in the 40-49 age group of the Baltimore Resolution Run 5K on New Year's Day. He ran 21:22 for 41st overall among 738 runners.

David Stevenson and Chi-Chin Wu were winners in the RASAC Holiday Run 5K in Bel Air Dec. 16. Stevenson ran 19:04 to lead the field of 30, and Wu led the women in 26:30. Duane Christy (23:34) and Christine Trzcinski (24:17) were the top finishers in the RASAC Merry Christmas 3.4-mile race in Fallston Dec. 23.

Tim Gavin of Jarrettsville and Steve Boutilier of Bel Air were among the finishers in the Tussey Mountain 42-mile race in Boalsburg, Pa., Dec. 2. Gavin finished in 9 hours, 44 minutes, and Boutilier in 9 hours, 57 minutes.
