Column: Cecil Fair, quarter auction, Eastern Star

It's that time again to mark your calendars for the 2012 Cecil County Fair to be held July 20 to 28 in Fair Hill.

A variety quarter auction will be held today (Friday) at St. Paul's Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall at 201 Mount Royal Ave. in Aberdeen. Doors open at 6 p.m. with games starting at 7. Food and drinks will be available. Paddles are $2 each with a two-paddle limit. Homemade and handmade gifts, gift cards, vendor items and more will be available. This event will benefit the National Youth Gathering.

The Grand Chapter of Maryland Order of the Eastern Star held its Western Maryland Grand Visitation swing this past week at Mountain Chapter 15, Oakland Chapter 67, Martha Washington Chapter 10 and McKinley Chapter 12.

The meeting at McKinley was also attended by several members local to our area, including members of Harford Chapter 83 in Bel Air – Worthy Matron Becky Gerdahl, Worthy Patron Ed Ford, Associate Matron Brenda Compher, Associate Patron Edsal Crouse, Secretary Jean Penley, Esther – Phyllis Pahutski, Warder Kathy Voris and members Ellen Crouse Russ and Sandy Bonchu, Maynard Geisler, Wilbur Carr PGP and Grand Ruth Beverly Geisler; from Victory Chapter 40 in Aberdeen, Worthy Matron Jeanne Gunn and Associate Grand Patron Bill Gunn; from Havre de Grace Chapter 27, Associate Matron Carolyn Mathias, Associate Patron Ron Mathias, Secretary Diane Smith, Chaplain Louise Fagan and me.

The 5th annual benefit 5K run/walk "Walk for Life" will be held on Saturday Oct. 6 on the Ma & Pa Heritage Trail. This event is to benefit Alpha's Glory. Online registration at Onsite registration will be held at 8 a.m.

St. Paul's Lutheran Church will hold vacation Bible School July 9 to 13 from ages 4 through fifth grade from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the fellowship hall.

An evening concert with Charlie Zahm, Tad Marks and Steve Hobson will be held on Friday Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Tickets for adults are $10, children under 16 are free. Delight with us in the sounds of Celtic, Maritime, Early Americana and religious music. Tony and Terry Carter will be celebrating their wedding anniversary on July 2.

Susie, Jimmy, Kelsey and Issi Glatts just returned from a cruise in the Bahamas. Susie reported that they boarded the ship on Saturday and did not see Issi again till the following Saturday. Out of the whole family she probably had the best time - Made several new friends, came home with phone numbers, emails and addresses and hasn't stopped texting everyone since she got back. Jimmy was ready to come home by Thursday but couldn't go anywhere unless he jumped ship.
