Somehow, it's already the middle of October and we all know what that means. Two months and less than 10 days until the chubby man with the white beard shows up on your doorstep and mine.
Somehow, though, we have to figure out how to get through Halloween and Thanksgiving before we can really focus on Christmas.
Well, there's plenty to keep us occupied in addition to the shopping that most of us will be doing. The middle of October also means the end of some seasons and postseason action begins in most Fall sports. Football is the real exception as we still have three weeks of play left in the regular season.
Starting with tonight (Wednesday), the action gets going with a pair of girls sports that should grab much attention. The UCBAC field hockey championship will be played tonight in Edgewood, pitting C. Milton Wright against Perryville. The Mustangs, champions of the Chesapeake Division, and the Panthers, champions of the Susquehanna, were both unbeaten in their respective league play. They also have something else in common: Janice Rhodes at CMW and Janet Candy at Perryville are first year head coaches at their respective schools.
Both have served as assistants before, but both took over the reigns this year. Congrats to both and to both teams. Tonight's game in Edgewood gets underway at 6 p.m.
A few miles north, a girls soccer game will take center stage as CMW will visit Fallston. What's on the line? The Chesapeake Division title. Assuming Fallston got past Rising Sun Tuesday, both teams will have 4-0-1 league records in tonight's big game.
Fallston will have to stay sharp, having to play its second game in as many days because Tuesday's Rising Sun game was weathered out Monday. This annual classic match up is set to begin at 6:45 p.m.
Now, I touched on it a bit last week, but Thursday night also brings out a big-time match on the football field. The Chesapeake Division is up for grabs and while it won't be completely settled, the winner of the CMW at North Harford contest will certainly have a leg up.
Both have 3-0 division records and both have wins over a key opponent in reaching this head-to-head game. CMW knocked off Fallston and North Harford beat Aberdeen.
We've had our number of big games in the past, but they pretty routinely occurred on the final week of the regular season. I guess this year, this isn't the case. Remember, the game is Thursday night at 7 p.m., not Friday.
All public school football games involving Harford and Cecil counties are slated for Thursday night this week. There are six other games on the schedule for Thursday, including Patterson Mill at North East and Perryville at Edgewood. Perryville pretty much has the Susquehanna wrapped up, but as I said last week, upsets happen.
Other games on the Thursday night schedule include Fallston at Joppatowne; Harford Tech at Elkton; New Town at Bel Air and Aberdeen at Havre de Grace.
Enjoy whatever game it is you choose to view.
