The Aberdeen IronBirds won a wild one on Sunday evening, battling back from six runs down to hand the host State College Spikes a 10-9 defeat.
Trailing, 9-3, after six full innings, Aberdeen scored three in the seventh, then plated four in the ninth to take a 10-9 advantage.
Stepping in to shut the Spikes down in the bottom of the ninth was converted infielder Tommy Winegardner, who allowed one hit before retiring the side for his third save of the season.
Getting the win was Aberdeen reliever Jose Nivar (2-0), who tossed one inning in which he struck out one, walked one, and held the Spikes hitless.
Leading Aberdeen at the plate was leadoff man Gregory Lorenzo, who went 3-for-5 with three runs and one RBI. Lucas Herbst was 2-for-5 with a triple, two RBIs and one run scored. Torsten Boss was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and one run in the victory, while fellow IronBird Cameron Edman was 1-for-4 with a double, one RBI and one run.
With the win, Aberdeen improved to 19-28 on the season. The IronBirds face the Spikes again Monday night in State College, before returning to Ripken Stadium for a Tuesday night contest with the Tri-City ValleyCats.
