Harford PTA group hosts legislative forum Oct. 20

The Harford County Council of Parent Teacher Associations will host its annual Legislative Forum this Thursday, Oct. 20, at Bel Air High School from 7 to 9 p.m.

The forum is an opportunity for parents and community members to be heard by a variety of educators and elected officials.

"The purpose of the forum is to bring together parents, educators, elected officials and HCPS administrators in an intimate setting to discuss questions, issues, and ideas for improving the educational experience for the children of Harford County," President Sandra Monaco-Burton wrote in an e-mail.

So far several Board of Education members and Harford County Council members have said they are coming, Monaco-Burton added, giving attendees an opportunity to have their voices heard and to "exchange information one-on-one" with decision makers in the school system and the local government.

This forum isn't just for parents, either, Monaco-Burton wrote. Anyone in the community who pays taxes or has questions about the school system is welcome and encouraged to attend. Some past questions on legislative night have ranged from curriculum to bullying initiatives to the impact on the county if the state pushes partial responsibility for teacher pensions on local school systems, she wrote.

The forum is coming at a appropriate time.

"Now is the time to provide input before the next legislative session and the budget season begin," Monaco-Burton wrote.
