Patterson Mill blanks John Carroll, 2-0, in girls soccer

Patterson Mill and John Carroll opened their girls high school soccer seasons Friday with a head-to-head clash at John Carroll.

The visiting Huskies got a goal in each half while keeping the Patriots silent for a 2-0 win.

Ramona Schueler and Peyton Marge tallied the Patterson Mill goals, while Sam Wuerfl and Taylor Dick were each credited with assists.

Patterson Mill goalie Stephanie Ehly registered the shutout with 17 saves; John Carroll keeper Susan Cumpston made eight saves.

Hawks open with win

North Harford opened the 2012 girls high school soccer season Friday with a 4-1 defeat of host Bo Manor.

North Harford scored first on a long shot from the right side by freshman Alison Beers in the 15th minute. Four minutes later, senior Sam Verzi scored on a penalty shot following a hand ball violation in the box.

A short time later, junior Tessa Mirjafary assisted an Olivia Ebey header for a 3-0 lead. Junior Megan Jones scored the fourth goal of the contest, also in the first half, with a short body deflection following a pass from junior halfback Ivy Chlan.

Bo Manor closed out the scoring in the second half with a goal from Cailley Chocran.

Hawks goalie Haley Jacobs made two saves.

Mustangs win one too

C. Milton Wright also picked up a win to start the season. The Mustangs blanked Reservoir, 3-0, Saturday at the Tuscarora Tournament in Frederick County. The Mustangs second scheduled game against Thomas Johnson was cancelled by lightning.

In the win, CMW scored twice in the first half. Megan Pavlitsa put the Mustangs on the scoreboard at the 18:20 mark with assist from Kathy Kammerer. Megan Frailer added the second goal 10 minutes later with assist from Mackenzie Cunningham.

Angela Kuhn closed out the scoring with 9:34 left to play, unassisted. CMW goalie Stacy Venanzi earned the shutout with three saves.
