Two Edgewood schools locked down Wednesday after 'suspicious' man in undershorts found on property

Two neighboring Harford County schools were placed on lockdown Wednesday after school officials and police received reports of a "suspicious" man, who had stripped to his undershorts, on school property.

The man was apprehended by police between Edgewood High and Middle schools on their Willoughby Beach Road campus Wednesday morning, the school system said.

According to a police report from the Harford County Sheriff's Office, the 34-year-old Edgewood man was wearing only black boxer-style underwear on the school complex between 9:30 and 10 a.m. School staff told police they had watched him undress and said he was running through the parking lot and approaching children and staff walking into the school.

He was also throwing money up in the air and "acting in a very bizarre manner," according to the report.

Police questioned the man, who they said could not answer simple questions. He was subsequently taken to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation.

No charges have been filed.

An e-mail went out to parents Wednesday evening from the Harford County Public Schools communications office that reads: "This morning, a suspicious male was identified on school property. The administration was made aware and both schools were immediately placed on lockdown as a precaution."

The school resource police officer was notified of the incident, the e-mail continued, and "the suspect was swiftly apprehended and placed into custody."

Both schools remained on lockdown until the man was in police custody, according to the e-mail, which did not specify the time the incident ended.

"The safety of our students and staff is our number one priority," the e-mail read, "and we will continue to keep you informed of issues affecting our schools."

In addition to the high and middle schools, Deerfield Elementary School is on the same campus.
