Man hurt Monday after chimney bricks fall on him in Street

A 27-year-old man was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center after bricks from a chimney fell on him in the 3000 block of Dublin Road near Street Monday morning, the Harford County Sheriff's Office said.

The incident was reported shortly after 11 a.m., and the Darlington Volunteer Fire Company responded to the scene, according to monitored Harford County emergency broadcasts.

"He was trying to dislodge some loose bricks from a chimney when a brick fell and struck him on the head," Sheriff's Office spokesman Eddie Hopkins said. "Reportedly his [7-year-old child] found him and called 9-1-1."

The call was originally reported as a fall from the roof, but Hopkins said that was not correct.

"My understanding was he was trying to dislodge them...possibly using something to throw at the chimney to free the loose bricks," Hopkins wrote in an e-mail Monday. "He did not fall, nor was he in cardiac arrest," which had also been initially broadcast to first responders.

In a followup email Tuesday afternoon, Hopkins wrote the victim "was trying to use a basketball to knock a tree branch off his roof that had fallen during a previous storm. The basketball apparently ricocheted off the roof or branch and struck the chimney causing the bricks to become dislodged. The brick fell from the roof striking the victim in the head."

Paramedics from Darlington VFC stabilized the victim until the Medevac arrived and landed across the street from the scene of the incident..

Hopkins said he did not have further information on the victim's injuries or the man's identity; however, the man was identified as Suan Anderson by his stepfather, Tracy Cochran.

Cochran said he and his wife, Suzanne, the victim's mother, live next door to Anderson.

Monday's incident was the second roof-related injury in Harford County this week and at least the third within a year. A roofer was flown to Shock Trauma last Thursday after he fell while working at a house in Forest Hill.

The Maryland Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating that incident.

A Parkville man fell from a roof in Forest Hill in Nov. 2012. He was flown to Shock Trauma but released the same day.
