Harford women's sorority celebrates 26 years of service to community

Members of the Chi Chapter of the Maryland Alpha Delta Kappa International Sorority that recognizes and celebrates outstanding women in education, gathered on May 4 to initiate a new member, Missy Wood, who teaches at William Paca/Old Post Road Elementary. The dinner meeting was held at Gerri Pendill's home in Bel Air. Both Gerri and her husband, John, prepared a home-cooked meal for the event. This has been voted by the Chi Chapter sorority sisters as their most favorite meeting of the year. The hospitality, the camaraderie and networking added to the welcoming atmosphere. As a finale to a year-long paring of "Secret Sorority Sisters" whose identities remained unknown, the final gift revealed the pairs of sisters who had been matched together.

This is Chi Chapter's 26th year of providing altruistic work to support not only students in Harford County Public Schools, but also citizens across Harford and Baltimore counties.

President Cheryl Monk shared, "We are a very active education based sorority. We work hard to follow a year-long program of events that focus on world understanding, providing charitable donations to altruistic projects such as supporting the efforts of St. Jude's Children's Hospital and pledging volunteer hours and service to others. Not only do we reach out to newcomers in the field of education, but we also share our instructional talents and years of experience in support of one another. We are stitching together a strong sisterhood and we value the individual expertise that each one of us possesses."

In July, a small contingency representing the Chi Chapter based in Harford County will travel to Washington, D.C., where the international Alpha Delta Kappa Convention will be held. Monk will be presenting a session at the educational forum on July 4. Her session: "Using Razzle Dazzle Reading and Writing Strategies: Engage and Energize Students to Sparkle and Shine in Their Responses," will focus on strengthening language arts instruction in classrooms across the country.
