Harford boys lacrosse season ready to kick off


Head coach: Hinson White (second year)

2012 record: 5-9

Outlook: "Depth is a concern," Coach Hinson White said. "Our success will hinge on our younger players' ability to acclimate quickly to the varsity level."

Bel Air

Head coach: Scoop Kelly (12th year)

2012 record: 11-7

Outlook: The Bobcats, a state semifinalist a year ago, return seven of 10 starters from that team. "We return some strength on paper, but we need to prove to ourselves daily throughout practice of how good we can be," Bobcats coach Scoop Kelly said. "I think with hard work, leadership, team play and a desire to be the best, we can go very far this year. It depends how dedicated and how hard these players want to work to make one another better. I love my guys and am looking forward to another exciting season of lacrosse." Defensively, Kelly says, all are a very solid unit with some great size. He believes once they improve footwork and fundamentals, the defense will be very tough.

C. Milton Wright

Head coach: Andrew Gerard (16th year)

2012 record: 11-6

Top returning players: Garrett Barker, Sr., (Defense); Andy Lebrun, Sr., (Midfield); Alex Meholic, Sr., (Attack) Paul Mirable, Sr., (Midfield); John Amos, Sr., (Midfield)

Key newcomers: Ryan Malone, Jr., (Goalie); Ben Boyd, Sr., (Attack); Drew Kissner, Jr. (Long pole midfield); Manny Mastromanolis, Jr., (Midfield)

Outlook: "We have a really solid core of returning players, the team has worked really hard the past few weeks and things are pulling together very nicely," Mustangs coach Andrew Gerard said. "We are very solid defensively and our offense is coming together very well. We expect to do well early in the season and continue to improve as the season progresses to be very competitive in the county.


Head coach: Kenny Porritt (third year)

2012 record: 1-12

Outlook: The past few years, the Edgewood lacrosse program has been a work in progress, with a lot of young players learning the sport. This year there are nine returning starters with a lot of varsity experience under their belts. Adding to this experience is the mix of young but enthusiastic players, that has created a team with a lot of potential and even enough players for a JV team. "We, as a coaching staff, are really looking forward to seeing what this team can do this season," Rams coach Kenny Porritt said.


Head coach: Matt Parks (12th year)

2012 record: 16-5

Outlook: "This team is a work in progress, graduating 15 seniors a year ago that all contributed including seven starters," Cougars coach Matt Parks said. "We have a good core of returning players that are eager to step into more prominent roles and live up to the expectations of the program."

Harford Tech

Head coach: Adam Stallings (first year)

2012 record: 8-4

Havre de Grace

Head coach: Brooks Brown (fifth year)

2012 record: 9-6

Outlook: "Team has been working hard in practice and trying to find its defensive identity," Brown said. "This is a senior laden team with the potential and opportunity to perhaps be the best ever fielded at Havre de Grace High School. At this point it is only potential and time will tell if the team will seize the opportunity."

John Carroll

Head coach: Matt Blair (first year)

2012 record: 9-5

Outlook: With a roster of almost 50 percent seniors, the Patriots have high expectations for 2013. "We opened MIAA B Conference play on Tuesday with a 17-4 win over AACS, but we expect tough competition from Curley, Friends, and Saints Peter & Paul as we compete for our first B Conference Championship since 2010," Patriots coach Matt Blair said.


Head coach: Brent Baldwin (sixth year)

2012 record: 3-8

Top returning players: Kevin Kinyua, Sr., (Midfield); Callean Gomez, Sr., (Midfield); Dillon Nicodemus, Sr.,(Defense); Tyler McDougal, Sr., (Midfield)

Outlook: "The team was very young last year, basically a JV team playing a varsity schedule," Mariners coach Brent Baldwin said. "We're returning a majority of the team, but low numbers hurt. Will see if they take the next step."

North Harford

Head coach: John Grubb (36th year)

2012 record: 12-6
