Battelle's Aberdeen site wins national security award

The Aberdeen location of Battelle, the nationwide science and technology company, has received an award for "outstanding industrial security" from the U.S. Department of Defense.

The Ohio-based non-profit won the James S. Cogswell Award for the eighth time since 1978, according to a press release sent Wednesday. The Aberdeen office received the award for the second time.

The award was given by the Defense Security Services Agency, part of the Defense Department, to the Battelle Eastern Science and Technology (BEST) Center in Aberdeen.

The Cogswell award is given annually to a select group of defense contractors for "sustained outstanding achievement in security," according to the release.

Only about 24 of the 13,000 eligible defense contractors in the U.S. are chosen for the award each year.

Battelle has offices across the country, as well as one in England. It opened its Aberdeen site in 2003 with a 16-lab complex.

"Battelle places a high value on security and safety while maintaining excellence in its research and development and lab management efforts," the company said in the release.

Battelle also won the award in 1978, 1986, 1997, 2006, 2007 and 2008.

"The Cogswell Award is a significant achievement," Steve Kelly, president of Battelle's National Security Division, said in the release. "It reflects a highly effective security program which is an essential component in Battelle's performance of mission-critical work for our country. It affirms to clients that Battelle is committed to delivering quality results – not only technically but also in safeguarding their critical information and technology."

The award was presented Wednesday at the annual seminar of the National Classification Management Society in Chicago.

Battelle, founded in 1929, conducts research and development, designs and manufactures products and delivers critical services for government and commercial customers.
