Von Davis had been waiting for this moment and Kentucky finally pulled the trigger.
The Mount Dora cornerback, who will be one of the most touted players in the state in the class of 2015, finally earned his first college football scholarship offer on Thursday, as Kentucky called on the 6-foot-, 175-pound sophomore.
"I’m really excited about it ... kinda shocked really, that it’s an SEC team," Davis said. "I haven't talked to them yet, but they called my coach to tell him and to talk to me but I wasn't around."
He'll be calling the Kentucky staff tonight, but he finally has that first offer in his pocket.
"Yes, I've been just waiting ... no doubt," Davis said. "I'm in 10th grade going into 11th grade and I was wondering when the offers were going to start coming in and wondering if I had to start going to more combines or whatever.
"I'm ready to take the challenge. I've just gotta work harder ... I want to be at the top level in my class, so I gotta work for it. I'm looking forward to putting in the effort and going for it."
Mount Dora coach Chad Grabowski, who has a load of talent in this year's crew up in Lake County, raves about the potential of this youngster.
"He's probably the best athlete on the team and should be a huge D-1 prospect," Grabowski said in a text today. "He already has SEC schools recruiting him and has the chance to be one of the best in the country."
Davis started as a freshman for Grabowski and this past season he played both ways, as athletes do at Mount Dora. He caught 29 passes for 630 yards and five touchdowns and on defense he had 35 tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery.
He runs a 4.4-second 40-yard dash and also starts on the Mount Dora basketball team.
"He has ball awareness like I've never seen," Grabowski said. "He should have about a dozen offers by the end of spring."
Spring practice begins Wednesday in Lake County.
