My Best Shot -- Turkey

Merrill Sinert of Winter Park, during recent travels in Turkey, found ancient columns in the ruins of the Asklepion at Pergamum irresistible. Merrill’s fascination is understandable, because Pergamum has been an area of great appeal since ancient times, especially during the Hellenistic period after Alexander the Great’s death, when it developed into a powerful kingdom. The ruins also include the Acropolis, the temples of Trajan and Athena and the theater. Pergamum’s modern-day successor is the city of Bergama. Pergamum also is mentioned in the Bible’s New Testament: It is one of the Seven Churches in the book of Revelation.
