Who doesn't love a monkey? The word just makes you smile. It may in fact be my favorite word of all time. So when the new trailer for "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" was released, I thought what better way to honor the preview than to rate my top 25 monkey films of all time.
OK, so monkey is a misnomer. It's really the top 25 films with monkeys, gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans. Sorry, no gibbons, although in the film "Fletch," there's a reference to a "gibbon suit." But "Fletch" isn't on the list.
Also not on the list is the Chris Elliott classic "Cabin Boy," although I will always remember David Letterman's sock monkey salesman. "Would you like to buy a monkey?" You can see a clip of that at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRwf5hfns4o
Also not on the list if Godzilla vs. King Kong, simply because I've never seen it. If I had, I'm sure it would be there.
And neither is Chim Chim from the movie version of "Speed Racer." If I had included TV, then he'd probably be here, but then again, so would the blue space monkey Gleek from the Super Friends cartoon.
So what is on the list?
King Kong? Yup, three of them (1933, 1976 and 2005).
Planet of the Apes? Four of them. Some old. Some new.
There's a flying monkey, a curious monkey and a pirate monkey.
