The news that Jenny McCarthy and Sherri Shepherd are out at "The View" is encouraging. Perhaps the show will be watchable again.
McCarthy and Shepherd were two of the worst offenders at talking over each other. Why put up with that noise? It's easier to change the channel.
"The View" even acknowledged the problem when Barbara Walters departed in May. The real Barbara asked a fake Barbara (Cheri Oteri) if there were any regrets about creating "The View."
"Little did I know that I would be surrounded by four cackling hens all speaking over each other where I couldn't get a word in edgewise," Oteri said.
Rarely has a show identified its main problem so clearly.
"The View" had a theme last season in paying tribute to Walters. Sure, "The View" may have gone overboard in saluting the TV news legend, but the show had a point: getting to that moment that Walters said goodbye.
Since she has been gone, the show has lost direction.
Whoopi Goldberg will be the only host left, and here's hoping ABC finds some courteous hosts who will conduct conversations worth hearing.
As for Walters, she is back on Friday's edition of "The View." (So much for that long goodbye.) She has a "20/20" interview to promote that airs at 10 p.m. Friday. (The Friday episode, by the way, was previously taped.)
McCarthy and Shepherd were both gracious in announcing their departures via Twitter.
"The number 7 is God's number of completion & after 7 seasons my time at The View is now complete! So grateful 2 every1 4 their love & support," Shepherd tweeted.
"If Sherri goes ... I go too. #sisters," McCarthy tweeted. She also wrote: "Thanks to everyone at the show for your dedication and an amazing year."
ABC released a statement: " 'The View' will be moving in an exciting new direction next season and ABC has made decisions to evolve the show creatively."
Please evolve it to pleasant and not a waste of time.
"The View" will be on hiatus next week. When the show returns Monday, July 7, that will be one of the most-watched episodes in "View" history. Might Walters return that day?
