Hialeah defensive lineman Calvin Smith has been on everyone's radar. Florida, Florida State, Miami, USF, UCF -- all Florida schools had their eyes on the coveted 6-foot-3, 260-pound DT.
Yet again, Tennessee has swooped in to South Florida and snatched another high profile commitment right out from under all of the homestate representatives.
"I knew he was close to making a decision," Hialeah coach Mark Berman told Scout affiliate InsideTennessee.com. "I have confirmed it. Coach Lane Kiffin and some of the Tennessee coaches are expected here today. That coaching staff has done a great job recruiting."
Smith, who many thought early on in the process would be a possible package deal with friend and teammate DE Corey Lemonier, (6-5, 223) picked Tennessee over Arkansas, UF, FSU and Illinois. Lemonier has taken his five visits to Auburn, Florida State, Illinois, LSU and Tennessee.
Smith joins five other state commitments to the Tennessee program, all of whom are from the MIami area: ATH Delvin Jones (Miami Palmetto), OL Jose Jose (Miami Central), WR Ted Meline (Miami Noth), K Michael Palardy (Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas) and LB Ralph Williams (Miami Southridge).
Tennesee coach Lane Kiffin, who hasn't won any hearts in Gainesville, also doesn't have a lot of fans in Tallahassee after his staff stole commitment Corey Miller of Duncan, S.C. Byrnes, and took teammate Brandon Willis with him.
With Kiffin's visit to Hialeah, you gott wonder if there's another commitment coming out of there today.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
