FSU offers OL Darrell Williams of Orlando Evans High; Seminoles are tops on short list

Former Evans football coach Greg Thompson said FSU has extended a scholarship offer and climbed to the top of the wish list for Trojans OL Darrell Williams, a rangy 6-5, 245-pounder whose recruitment continues to gain momentum.

Thompson, now Evans track coach, said on Tuesday that he has talked to Florida State offensive line coach Rick Trickett "four or five times" since last week about Williams.

"Coach Trickett really likes him. He just wanted to make sure that Darrell would be a good fit for FSU," Thompson said. "I told him I think he would be a great fit for them."

Williams is the third local offensive lineman courted by the Seminoles. FSU has also extended offers to Boone's Max Lang and DeLand's Trey Pettis already committed to the Seminoles last fall.

"He hasn't committed to them, I don't think," Thompson said of Williams, "but he's very excited about FSU. That's who he's leaning toward. It may be a situation where he gets redshirted because he needs to gain 40 to 50 pounds. He'll be a 300-pound guy that can move."

Williams also has offers from USF, South Carolina, Ole Miss, NC State, Colorado State, FIU and FAU.

"He recently got his bench press up to 330 pounds, which I think is good for a guy with the long arms Darrell has," Thompson said. "He went to FIU's lineman camp last weekend and graded out as their top lineman. They loved him."
