Florida 2011 commitment Clay Burton was surprised when he learned the Gators had hired Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp as the next head coach.
"I knew who he was, but obviously I was totally shocked he was the one who was chosen," said Burton, the brother of current Florida QB/HB Trey Burton. "You know, everyone has an idea of who they'd like to see hired. We all heard about Jon Gruden or Bobby Stoops.
"I wanted to see them get Jon Gruden because it would be such an honor to play for him. He's a great coach ... and Bobby Stoops too."
But once he started to hear more about Muschamp, Burton, a 6-foot-3, 235-pound senior linebacker at Venice High, began to come around to the idea.
"Everyone is telling me he's a high-energy guy, a great coach and that he's going to be great for me," Clay said. "That's what my high school coaches have told me, so I'm pretty happy about it."
Clay happened to be in Gainesville for his official visit this weekend and was able to discuss the news with his brother.
"Yeah, we talked about it and he said he was happy about it too," Clay said. "I'll be up there January 3rd or 4th and ready to get going."
He said the situation wasn't too difficult to deal with because his commitment was not only to former head coach Urban Meyer, but the entire program,
"I didn't expect it, but I'm happy with Coach Muschamp. I knew we'd get a quality guy," Clay said. "And I didn't commit to the coach. I committed to play football and all of the other stuff that goes along with that. I'm happy with choice and happy that that I'm still going to be able to play with my brother."Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
