Cocoa High star RB Chevelle Buie commits to Rutgers

Cocoa High running back Chevelle Buie committed to Rutgers on Tuesday night, according his coach Johnny Wilkinson.

"Yes that is what I heard," Wilkinson said. "David Rowe, who played for us three years ago, said he did commit today. [Buie] has been up there at (camp) since Saturday."

Buie's phone went straight to voice mail Tuesday night, but a message was left for the 5-foot-9, 160-pound speedster.

"Just from talking to him, he really liked Florida and Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, but whatever he saw in Rutgers must have been good ... and he likes that David is up there," Wilkinson said. "But yeah, I am surprised. He's got to do what's best for him, though."

Buie picked Rutgers over offers from Auburn, Clemson, Duke, FAU, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, LSU, Michgan, South Carolina and TCU.

Buie, the No. 19-ranked player in the Sentinel's Florida Top 100 by Bill Buchalter, has helped Cocoa to back-to-back Florida state 2A championships.

He's piled up some impressive stats in those two seasons. Last season Buie had 1678 yards and 17 touchdowns, and the versatile back also had 22 catches for 400 yards and 4 touchdowns. In his sophomore campaign, Buie had 1697 yards and 16 touchdowns on 173 carries, and caught 15 balls for 277 yards and three touchdowns.
