Auburndale athlete Derwin James Jr. committed to the Florida State Seminoles on Saturday, the first commitment to the Class of 2015 for FSU.
James' commitment came as quite a surprise, especially with so many upper classmen on hand at the Seminoles junior day in Tallahassee, but it was the little-know James with the big commitment.
Reached by phone on his way home from Tallahassee with his father James Sr., Derwin Jr. sayd he "didn't hae a clue," that he would end up committing prior to his arrival on campus Saturday.
"I'm still in shock. I haven't really told anyone yet. My friends ... they won't believe me," Derwin Jr. said. "It felt good. It's just a school that I've liked since I was young and it feels like the best school for me.
"I like the atmosphere, the coaches, the way they run the program, al that stuff."
James Jr. is likely headed to college as a safety, but he still has three seasons of high school football remaing and he could add plenty more size to his 6-foot-3, 186-pound frame. He said he wears bewteen a size 12 and 13 shoe.
James, who is the secod cousin of former Miami and NFL star Edgerrin James and current UM runing back Mike James, also plays offense for Auburndale, running out of the wide receiver position and sometimes running back, while also taking the quarterback position over when his team runs the Wildcat formation.
He posted on his Facebook page a photo of him and his father posing with FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher, and wrote, "Good news just comit to fsu."
He's quick and runs a 4.47 40-yard dash. He's also heady and has a knack for timing his hits in the defensive backfield at the precise moment the receiver is about to catch a ball.
James Jr. said Coach Fisher "couldn't believe what grade I was in. Everybody thinks I'm older. It's just the way I act." And how big he is. Certainly mature beyond his years in both categories.
He said he doesn't forsee a problem keeping a commitment that won't become official until Nationanl Signing Day of Feb. 4, 2015.
"I know I can do it," he said.
