When Carol Dawson of Orlando visited Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania, she wanted to take a picture of the gazebo's romantic setting. She says she was hoping the people in the gazebo would leave, but they stayed a while, so she took the photo anyway. "Later," she says, "we met them on the path and learned that we had witnessed a marriage proposal." And she gave them a copy of her picture. The gardens near Kennett Square, Pa., about 30 miles from Philadelphia, trace their history back to an arboretum planted on a working farm in 1798. Pierre S. du Pont, of DuPont Co. fame, bought the farm in 1906 and began its conversion into the horticultural showplace it is today.
