CBS will give you Neil Patrick Harris as you've never seen him. The star of "How I Met Your Mother" will perform his Tony-nominated role in "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" at the Broadway awards show on the network.
In "Hedwig," Harris plays an East German transgender performer whose sex-change operation went horribly wrong. The character is galaxies away from Barney of "HIMYM."
The Tonys start at 8 p.m. June 8 on CBS. Hugh Jackman will host.
Other musical performers will be familiar to TV viewers. Alan Cumming of "The Good Wife" reprises his Tony-winning role in a performance from the "Cabaret" revival. "Frozen" and "Glee" favorite Idina Menzel performs a song from "If/Then." And Sutton Foster of "Bunheads" performs with the cast of "Violet."
The Tony telecast will feature performances from the musicals "Aladdin," "Les Misérables," "Beautiful," "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder," "Bullets Over Broadway" and "Rocky." Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight and Fantasia perform with the cast of "After Midnight."
The cast of "Wicked" will mark that show's 10th anniversary, and Sting will perform a song from his upcoming musical, "The Last Ship."
