The Orlando Magic will take a first step in their 2012-13 season today when they gather at Amway Center for team meetings and their annual media day.
The roster has undergone a radical transformation since May 9, the last time the entire team (sans Dwight Howard) assembled at the arena. In are 12 new players, a new coach, a new coaching staff, a new general manager and a remade basketball operations department.
Last season’s media day was dominated by questions about Howard’s future and how his teammates and coaches would respond to the uncertainty over his future. A circus-like atmosphere permeated the entire event.
Today will jump-start a critical month for the team, as the players and the coaching staff continue to acclimate to each other. The franchise has plenty on its to-do list in October, as this article makes clear.
• What message will new coach Jacque Vaughn send to his players today when he meets with them as a group?
• How are the seven returning players dealing with the expectations that the team will struggle this season?
• What will be the characteristics of a Vaughn-coached team and how will Vaughn’s style coalesce in his first head-coaching job?
The answers to these questions will start to be answered today.
Media day is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
Practice begins Tuesday morning.
