SCOUTING REPORT: Named a co-captain by coach Jacque Vaughn before last season, Davis helped propel the rebuilding Magic to a surprising 12-13 start and the league's sixth-best defensive efficiency rating. Davis was en route to a career-best year until he dislocated his left shoulder during a game on Dec. 19. The injury proved to be the Magic's turning point. The team's defense never recovered. After he missed 11 games because of the shoulder injury, Davis played in eight more games. Then, in his ninth game back, he fractured the outside of his left foot; he subsequently underwent surgery and missed the rest of the season. On July 8, he had a second surgery to promote healing in his foot.
THE SEASON AHEAD: The Magic will be ultra-cautious as they bring Davis back from his most recent foot surgery — making sure he doesn't do too much, too soon — and he will miss training camp, perhaps the entire preseason and maybe the beginning of the regular season. But Davis remains the Magic's best low-post defender. Once he's fully healthy, I envision him returning to his starting role, although Tobias Harris, Andrew Nicholson and Jason Maxiell could push him for minutes at the 4. Offensively, Davis is at his best when he's on the move and driving to the hoop. He has a tendency to fall in love with his midrange jumper. Davis could draw interest from other teams as the NBA trade deadline approaches on Feb. 20.
ODDS & ENDS: Davis' full name is Ronald Glen Davis. . . . He was an accomplished high-school football player. . . . His Twitter handle is @iambigbaby11.
