NBA SEASONS: 2012-13 is his ninth

HOW HE CAME TO ORLANDO: Drafted 20th overall in 2004 by the Denver Nuggets, then traded to Orlando for a future first-round pick. . . . Nelson re-signed with the Magic after flirting with free agency this summer, a three-deal that reportedly netted him nearly $20 million.

SCOUTING REPORT: Nelson is now the unquestioned leader of the team after the trade of Dwight Howard. He averaged 11.9 points and 5.7 assists in 57 games last season. One of the team’s most prolific 3-point shooters, Nelson slipped to 37.7 percent last season — his lowest percentage since 2006-07. He has often struggled to stay healthy, but this season is even more crucial with Ish Smith and T’waun Moore as his backups. They have relatively little experience. Nelson must overcome his lack of height with his strength, but still struggles on the defensive end. He never has been a player to shy away from taking the last-second shot and that won’t change this season.

ODDS & ENDS: Howard nicknamed Nelson “Mighty Mouse,” but it will be the first time since they were drafted together in 2004 that Nelson and Howard will be playing for different teams.
