Spring football Super 16

Here's how we rank the area's top teams coming out of spring practice (with 2012 record):

1. Apopka (13-2): Anticipation even hotter following 46-13 spring dismantling of Winter Haven (10-2).

2. Oviedo (11-2): Lions will rely on playmakers Chris Davis and Jurell Green as they return to Class 8A.

3. Dr. Phillips (13-1): Panthers thumped Apopka early in 2012 before losing playoff rematch.

4. Timber Creek (10-2): Fireworks with man-child RB Jacques Patrick. QB Stuckey Mosley and Javonte Seabury in slot.

5. Kissimmee Osceola (13-1): With Riley Nicholson back from injury, defense should be nasty. If offense steps up, we foresee 10-0 again.

6. Evans (9-3): Lots of new faces in lineup, including promising rising sophomore QB Ervin "Woody'' Barrett.

7. West Orange (5-5): Hayden Griffitts to Garrett Johnson passing connection and running of Jamarcus Federick make Warriors lethal.

8. New Smyrna Beach (9-1): Barracudas missed two-way standout D'Cota Dixon in 26-24 spring loss at Palm Beach Central.

9. Daytona Beach Mainland (9-4): Buccaneers are young, but adding Seabreeze transfer Trevaughn Rodriguez is huge.

10. Olympia (5-6): Offense fizzled after QB Deondre Francois went down on first drive of 7-0 spring loss to Winter Park.

11. Lake Brantley (9-2): Seasoned defense looked fine in spring win, but Patriots have to re-stock offense.

12. Lyman (5-5): Greyhounds looked great in weight room, not so great in spring loss to Lake Howell.

13. Oak Ridge (7-4): Former All-Pro RB Ricky Watters can start drawing plays for QB Jerell Antoine and his skill-position talent.

14. Winter Park (4-6): With myriad varsity veterans back and DE Trent Harris leading tough "D," Wildcats should see shiny side of .500.

15. Orlando University (7-4): Cougars made playoffs with punishing running game, but they passed it well in spring win vs. Bishop Moore.

16. Mount Dora (8-3): If 56-28 spring win vs. Wekiva is any indication, 5A Hurricanes will climb this chart.

Watch list: DeLand (6-5), First Academy (12-1), Lake Nona (8-3), Lake Mary (7-3)
