Orlando Freedom cornerback Jay Maduro will be headed to Foxboro, Mass., today to compete in the two-day Blue-Grey National Super Combine at the NFL New England Patriots practice facility.

Maduro, a rising senior, earned the trip to the Boston-area combine by being named Defensive Backs MVP at the Tampa regional combine, also put on by the new Blue-Grey All-American Bowl, which will be played at the end of the year at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

“I feel good because I went out there with the mindset that I was going to compete and do well against some of the best players in Florida, and I came out and did my best,” said Maduro, a 5-10, 175-pound defensive back. “When I showed up I didn’t see a lot of competition out there, but as the day went on I saw a lot of guys doing big things and I held my own.  …  it feels great.”

Maduro is one of only seven Florida players selected to participate in the event. Others are fellow rising seniors OL Hunter Johnson of Panama City Bozeman,  QB Willie Micco of Port St. Lucie Treasure Coast and DL Anthony Ryals of Lake Minneola,  LB Matthew Solt of Gainesville High, 2015 OL Chance Belloise of Gulf High, and DE Whit Wiggins of Fort Myers Southwester Florida Christian.

At the Tampa Combine, Maduro ran a 4.52-second 40-yard dash, had a shuttle time of 4.3 seconds, and a broad jump of 8 feet, 3 inches.

Maduro said things are going well at Freedom with new coach Jeff Higgins.

“I like him. He’s going to do lot of things for our program. He knows his stuff, knows what he’s talking about. He told me go out and do my best and compete … if I compete and do good I’ll be invited in January for the All-American game in Tampa.”

He said he wasn’t nervous about the event, for which he leaves early Saturday morning.

“No sir … I’m hyped up, excited,” he said.  “I can’t wait.”
