Seeking thrills in Central Florida, or something different than the theme park experience when friends and family visit?
Check out Wallaby Ranch in Davenport, and see their daily hang gliding flights.
Wallaby Ranch, located near Celebration, is a sprawling complex that is home to over 250 gliders and several towing aircraft and support vehicles.
The Owner / Founder Malcolm Jones founded the ranch in 1991, out of a lifetime love of hang gliding, as a school to teach people to hang glide and experience tandem flight using the Aerotow method. The Aerotow method allows the glider to be towed to altitude behind a powered aircraft with wheels attached to the frame, creating a more user-friendly experience for beginning students or people just wanting to experience a flight.
Florida is prime real estate for hang gliding with this method, as the converging air masses from the Gulf and Atlantic create good thermal activity without a lot of the turbulence you find near mountainous areas. To capture the experience, two GoPro cameras were mounted to a glider to capture the flight, while I filmed from the ground and a second aircraft.
First timer Kristin Lennox, likened the experience to riding a roller coaster, and plans to fly again.
Anyone with a love of flying, or perhaps an adventurous bucket list should stop by to check out the action.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
