Damu Cherry works through injury on way to Olympics

Orlando Sentinel

This is a series of updates on Olympic hurdler Damu Cherry of Winter Garden, Florida, as she continues her comeback from an achilles injury that kept her from representing the USA in the World Track and Field Championships recently in Korea.

We visited Cherry in October as she began her training with long endurance runs and weight training.

Today, we revisit Cherry at the National Training Center in Clermont as she takes her first steps at hurdling, a scary time for any athlete in the very technical discipline of hurdling as they fear re-injury.

Her coach Dennis Mitchell, also has the daunting task of reining in a very competitive Cherry who wants to be in top form now.

Last week's goal was just two hurdles. Mission accomplished for Cherry, whose next goal is competing at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Track & Field in Oregon in June.
