My experiences with sand castles are inauspicious.
On the beach, I'm more likely to have sand kicked in my face than to employ it in the creation of some miniature architectural gem. My lumpy, cup-shaped mounds of mud are quickly washed away and, trust me, it's no great loss.
So I'm always impressed by the stunning creations at events such as the Art of Sand Festival, slated to unfold for its second year Oct. 14-23 at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. Somehow, it won't be the same away from the beach, but "art" is the perfect word to describe the work by sand sculptors who come from around the world to participate.
It's a long time until October, but the artist lineup for 2011 already includes entrants from Singapore, Italy, Russia, Canada, Ireland and The Netherlands.
What will they do?
The event touts its sand creations as "3-D" art. Massive also would describe them, with typical sculptures standing about 18 feet tall and weighing several tons. This year's theme is "Travel," so expect the works to reflect distinctive aspects of the artists' homelands.
There also will be sand activities for less accomplished creative types. Visitors to the event can partake in hands-on activities, including many with kids in mind. Local schools and businesses will be invited to participate in sand-sculpting contests and will have an opportunity to get tips from the experts. Music and entertainment also will be provided by Brevard County cultural groups.
It's no beach, of course, but Space Coast Stadium (spring training home of the Washington Nationals baseball team ) was selected to host the event because it's centrally located off Interstate 95. Yeah, I'd prefer the beach, but it's some consolation that by the time these artists are done crafting their creations, the ball park will look pretty close.
I hope no one kicks sand in my face.
