The unnamed 96-year-old woman jumped to her death from the balcony of the independent living facility in St. Petersburg where she had been a resident for the past 20 years.
Ronald Benjamin, a front desk clerk at Peterborough apartments, saw the woman's dead body around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday but thought it was a prank and left it in the parking lot. At around 6 a.m. Rose Anne Beavers came to take over Benjamin's shift and the two decided that the "mannequin" needed to be removed, so they put it in a trash bin.
About two hours later, a maintenance worker saw the remaining puddle of blood and asked what had happened. He was told about the prank, but went to investigate himself. When he saw the body in the trash bin, he immediately knew what it was and called 911.
