Photojournalists, in the course of the careers, can attend hundreds of press conferences. Most of them are pretty dull with a person talking at a microphone and if one is lucky, there’s an interesting background.
But sometimes you have a subject that is just more expressive. Sentinel photographer Stephen Dowell found that at Daytona International Speedway Thursday with driver Danica Patrick. A standout already as one of the few women competing in NASCAR, she also is known for her strong personality. So when she went through a series of expressions, Dowell had a nice set of photos.
These kinds of photos often don’t end up with the stories, however. A fleeting smile or puffed cheeks might not have anything to do with the person’s answers to the writers’ questions. But is a treat for the photographer who too often is trying to make an interesting photo of a stone-faced subject.
