Marcia Kiernan of Indialantic says she found her experience of Rome's historic Colosseum to be bittersweet. She visited the monument during a 40th-anniversary trip in Europe with her husband. "For three days we walked all over Rome, and when we came upon the Colosseum, I was awestruck by its majesty," Marcia said. "This feeling soon turned to sadness as I entered it — sadness for the depravity of man and what had taken place here." The amphitheater, built between A.D. 70 and 80, was the scene of bloody gladiatorial games as well as the deaths of thousands of people deemed criminals by the Roman emperors. "This photo I took of angles and battered edges spoke to me," Marcia said.
