Oviedo QB Chris Davis Jr., who is committed to UCF as a wide receiver, was the lone recruit on hand for UCF’s win over Akron on Thursday night.
Davis, who led Oviedo past Lyman in the season opener for both teams, said it was kind of weird sitting there with his father as the only recruiting guests at Bright House Networks Stadium, but he enjoyed it nonetheless. Thursday night games are difficult for recruits to make visits.
“I liked it a lot. It was a good experience,” said Davis, whose only other UCF game experience was in 2009 when the Knights suffered a 27-7 loss to Miami.
He said he noticed the lack of attendance — announced at 35,115, but obviously far short of that number — for the Akron game. The attendance, however, didn’t concern him too much.
“At first I kind was kind of surprised, but then I got to thinking that it’s basically like a classic game for UCF and Akron really isn’t that good,” he said. “But I know for the South Carolina game and the USF game, it will be packed.”
He watched with particular interest in how UCF is running its offense. The 91-yard touchdown pass from Blake Bortles — also from Oviedo — to Breshad Perriman off the second snap from scrimmage had to get his anticipation flowing considering his future as a college receiver.
“I like it. They’re running the spread a lot this year so when I get there, hopefully they’ll be doing the same thing,” Davis said.
Davis committed to the Knights in June and had offers from 14 other offers, including Georgia Tech, Rutgers, Purdue and Minnesota, but he said the recruiting has stopped since his made his intentions public. “Once I committed, all the letters started to slow down. I still get some but nothing really serious,” he said.
UCF is nearly done with its 2014 recruiting class due to scholarship limits. The Knights will bring in 12 scholarship players next season, although attrition could open a few more spots.
