Miami lands another hometown star in BTW defensive end Chad Thomas

Orlando Sentinel

The Miami Hurricanes keep bringing in the hometown boys and just like his Booker T. Washington teammate Nigel Bethel did Friday, star defensive end Chad Thomas committed to the Hurricanes on Saturday morning.

Thomas, a 6-foot-5, 240-pound specimen of an athlete, got the red-carpet treatment while at FSU camp on Thursday, but it wasn’t enough and he decided to stay home with the Hurricanes, according to a text message from Bethel.

Thomas, the No. 29-ranked player in the Sentinel’s 2014 Florida Top 100, also posted his choice to his Twitter account, @F5_Chad: “I’m a Hurricane.”

And apparently he’s an F5 Hurricane, at that.

Hurricane Chad brings the UM commitment count to 23 players for the 2014 class and he joins Bethel and another BTW teammate Demetrius Jackson, his bookend defensive end on the other side of the Tornadoes defense.

Of Miami's 23 commitments, 12 are from Miami-Dade or Broward counties as the 'Canes have been gaining ground in reharnessing their grasp on South Florida.

In the past two seasons at Booker T., Thomas has nine sacks and registered 119 tackles, an average of about four tackles a game for the Tornadoes, whose starters don’t usually get back on the field much past halftime in most of their lopsided victories.

Booker T. has been in the Class 4A state title game in each of the past two seasons, losing to Jacksonville Bolles in 2011, but then returning the favor in a rematch this past season.
