The popular host of DIY Network's Man Caves and Desperate Landscapes shares his passion for architecture and the wood shop, along with tips, advice and behind-the-scenes stories during his appearances on the IKEA Home Stage at the Central Florida Home + Garden Show.
How did you get into carpentry?
My dad was an electrician and he would occasionally do framing & roofing jobs on the side. At about the age of 12 or 13, I would tag along with him and try to help and that is when I first started to become passionate about working with my hands. All that experience eventually led to my career as a contractor/carpenter.
What's your favorite item in your own man cave?
The sad thing is, after building over 140 Man Caves, I don't have my own yet! I live in a 980 square foot condo with my wife and theres no room for one! But trust me, I know exactly what I want. It's already build in my head & my favorite item will eventually be my walk-in cigar humidor!
What's the best advice you've been given?
Always treat people with respect and when you tell someone your going to do something, you look them in the eyes, shake their hand and Do It!!
Name your 5 favorite songs on your ipod?
Train - Hey Soul Sister; Van Halen - Hot for Teacher; Nickleback - Burn it to the Ground; Kiss - Lick It Up; Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love; and one more... Mumford and Sons - I Will Wait.
What's your personal mantra?
Work hard and never take anything for granted.
