Regulating the heat

Bill Jones, FPL operating technician, calibrates the instrumentation for the water heaters for the canal where manatees will hang out at the FPL power plant at the Indian River this winter, on Tuesday, November 23, 2010. The plant has been demolished, and the utility will soon start building a replacement, but that will take years. In the meantime, a massive industrial water heater has been installed to turn the plant site’s intake canal into a warm pool big enough for 1,000 manatees or more.
