There are also plenty of notable events that happened 30 years ago, like the introduction of DNA profiling in criminal cases and the inaugural launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery.
In the world of sports, 1984 was the year Walter Payton broke Jim Brown's rushing record. It was also the year the Clippers moved to Los Angeles and the year that saw hockey great Wayne Gretzky win his first Stanley Cup.
There was no shortage of notable events in the music industry. It might be hard to believe for some, but Bon Jovi, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Run DMC all kicked off their careers 30 years ago.
